ABOUT
Metallic plates shifting inside, building a layer of protection turning into stone, a shield crafted from instinctive devotion.
This was the catalyst; growing an exoskeleton when pregnant. Using this as a silhouette resulted in 'protective' pieces that encase an illustration of symbolic references to motherhood.
Connected to the earth, forever a part of nature
The alterations to body, psyche and soul motherhood creates is astonishing.
I explore the shifts that time brings in parenthood. When armour sheds, the next metamorphosis during chrysalis, the mind in ecdysis. Adaptations are born.
In the 1600’s the noun Tattoo referred to the sound made within the military to signal soldiers to return to the safety of camp. In the 1700’s it became the verb referring to the permanent marks or designs upon the skin by puncturing it and inserting a pigment.
Tattoos, specifically in women and why they have them, has greatly influenced my work
My body is a canvas, I am drawn to the traditions of this art form as a way to visually tell my story. They are symbolic, reminders and gifts for the ones I love. A visual drum beat to represent home.
My illustrations are concepts of evolutions, steeped in symbolism and nostalgic to my culture's folk tales. An offering to motherhood and the power of women.
